1966 Harmony H78 Vintage Electric Guitar, Heath-Branded w/ DeArmond Gold Foils, Bigsby B3 & Case

Up for sale, a 1966 Harmony H78 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. This particular USA-made Harmony iteration is branded "Heath by Harmony," indicating that it was distributed by Heath (of Heathkit fame), and the H78 was at the tip top of Harmony's vintage guitar line. The guitar features three DeArmond gold foil pickups, a figured curly maple body, factory-installed Bigsby B3 vibrato tailpiece, and nitrate tortoise appointments.

Lightweight at 6lbs 13oz, the hollow maple body yields both immediacy and warmth. The DeArmond gold foil pickups have a percussive snap and twang, tight bass, and a harmonically-rich midrange which sounds great when each pickup is singled out or when paired together in any one of seven combinations. Unlike many gold foils, the ones on the H78 also feature adjustable pole pieces to further dial in the balance between the strings. This H78 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

Neck Specs:

-Wood: Maple
-Shape: ā€œBaseball batā€ U, measuring .940ā€ 1st fret, .985ā€ 12th fret
-Fretboard: Brazilian rosewood, block inlay, multi-ply binding
-Frets: Slender, faint wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5
-Scale Length: 24 1/4ā€
-Nut: 1 3/4ā€, nylon
-Headstock: Nitrate tortoise overlay and truss rod cover
-Tuners: Waverly, open-gear

Body Specs:

-Wood: Maple
-Pickups: DeArmond gold foil x3 (Bridge and Neck pickups rewound, ā€œSept 15, 1966ā€ date stamps on baseplates)
-Controls: Volume x3, Tone x3, Pickup on/off x3
-Hardware: Brazilian rosewood bridge with nylon saddle insert, Bigsby B3 vibrato
-Plastics: Tortoise pickguard (modern), switch plate, DeArmond bell knobs, baton switch tips

The gloss Red Sunburst (catalog: ā€œRich Brown Mahogany Shadingā€) nitro lacquer finish is framed by multi-ply binding and the finish has aged considerably on top, retaining more of the red tones on the back and highlighting curly figuring in the maple. The finish exhibits subtle lacquer checking, with moderate buckle rash on the lower bout of the back and some minor nicks and scuffs from more than a half-century of careful usage. The lacquer gloss on the neck profile is clean and smooth.

A modern molded SKB hardshell case is included.
