1976 Greco EX800 Explorer Vintage Electric Guitar, Destroyer 2459 w/ Case, Japan Fujigen

1976 Greco EX800 Explorer Vintage Electric Guitar, Destroyer 2459 w/ Case, Japan Fujigen

Up for sale, a 1976 Greco EX800 Explorer in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. 100% original save for a swapped pickguard, the EX800 is one of the more unique and rare "lawsuit era" instruments produced at the beginning of one of Japan's most storied periods of guitar production. The guitar faithfully replicates Gibson's original Explorer design with superb build quality, boasting a glued-in long tenon neck joint and a pair of Maxon-made U-2000 humbuckers.

If your brain immediately goes to early Van Halen territory, we can hardly blame you, as this guitar features identical construction to the Ibanez Destroyer model 2459 used extensively on Van Halen I. The EX800 is the same instrument under a different name, with a more Gibson-esque headstock logo, made in the famed Fujigen factory alongside its Ibanez Destroyer cousin. Same factory, same guitar.

The EX800 is loaded with the original pair of Maxon-made U-2000 humbuckers (the Super 70 humbuckers in the Ibanez iteration are also Maxon-made). These pickups feature Alnico V magnets and are articulate and warm, with good top end growl, sustain, and punch, responding well to thick overdrive and delivering an open, dynamic treble response. The guitar has a particularly resonant and clear natural acoustic tone, with the midrange complexity and clear note attack inherent in ash. This EX800 weighs 8lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

Neck Specs:

-Wood: Maple (three-piece)
-Shape: Medium C, measuring .835ā€ 1st fret, .945ā€ 12th fret
-Fretboard: Rosewood, 22-fret, dot inlay
-Frets: Medium jumbo, light wear beneath D string on frets 4-14
-Scale Length: 24 3/4ā€
-Nut: 1 11/16ā€, bone
-Tuners: Gotoh
-Serial: Pre-serial example

Body Specs:

-Wood: Ash
-Pickups: Maxon U-2000 humbucker x2 (baseplates date to ā€˜76)
-Controls: Volume x2, Tone, Three-way pickup selector
-Harness: Untouched solder, full-size Japanese pots
-Hardware: Nashville-style bridge, stopbar
-Plastics: Three-ply white pickguard (replacement), gold bonnet knobs

The gloss Natural finish highlights the grain of the ash body, and cosmetic wear includes light buckle worming central to the back and a couple shallow, non-structural splits between the bridge inserts and tailpiece that are only ā€œskin deepā€ yet more prominent than finish checking. There are also some minor nicks and scuffs on the body as a whole, and some small finish chips on the body points and perimeter. The gloss on the neck profile is clean and smooth with just a few shallow marks.

The original black tolex hardshell case with green form-fit interior is included.
